Prepare, Don't Despair! Hurricane Preparation: Planning Your Evacuation Route

While our Florida homes are wonderful residences 99% of the time, hurricanes unfortunately factor in for that remaining 1%. Vacation ready property next to or close to water often times become dangerous places when the high speed winds and rain hit. One of the most important ways to prepare if you live on such a property is an evacuation route.

Often times your county will have suggestions of where to go depending on the storm's route. However, here are some things you can do to prepare now.

1. Have Options

Have a list of family, friends, hotels, and shelters so that you have more than one option to choose from. Hurricanes often have different paths so try to have different places that are spread out. If you have a pet or a young child, take that into consideration and make sure you have proper medical and identification papers such as social security, birth certificates, and veterinary records.

2. Map It Out and Do a Trial Run

Make sure you know how to get to your location without the aid of technology. You might be caught in a situation where power and WIFI is scarce or nonexistent so plan out your escape route. Either memorize it or have it on paper as well as saved to your phone. Do a trial run so that you are familiar with the procedure in case you need to perform it in real life.

3. Stay Knowledgeable

Try to stay in tune with your local radio or TV station and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as they will update you where to evacuate to. They will remind you of things to bring as well as give you tips and advice that might be desperately needed when everything around you is chaotic. They are great resources.

Hopefully these tips will help you and your family be better prepared for this coming hurricane season. The most important thing during this time of year is keeping your loved ones safe.
