Prepare, Don't Despair! Hurricane Preparation: Protecting Your Home

There is an average of 6 hurricanes every season from August to November, with the most amount of hurricanes forming in September. With this in mind, if your home is located in a hurricane-prone area, it's a good idea to fortify your house against wind and water. With winds of more than 100mph, you will be glad you did. Here are some steps you can take to make your home storm-resistant:

1. Cut down hanging branches and trees

With high winds, vegetation and shrubbery can easily be blown away or uprooted. If your home lays in their path, it's very possible they can ruin your roof or blow through your windows. Cutting them and trimming weak branches can prevent you from getting a nasty surprise.

2. Install storm shutters

Anything flying in the air from the winds can easily blow through your windows and into your home. Protect them with storm shutters. Alternatively, you can board your windows with plywood which is the cheaper option.

3. Prevent flood damage

Using sandbag is a great way of mitigate flooding if your home is in an prone area. Shutting off electricity during this time is also a precautionary step to take to ensure safety. Elevating your electronics such as computers and printers can prevent damages to expensive possessions. Same logic is applied to rugs, mats, or anything fabric that can accumulate mold. Store them somewhere high to prevent dampness.

Hopefully these tips will help you and your family be better prepared for this coming hurricane season. The most important thing during this time of year is keeping your loved ones safe.
