Lessons from Hurricane Ian

Hurricane Ian was an unexpected hurricane for Florida, and it taught us many lessons for future hurricanes. In this article, we will be discussing what Ian taught Floridians about the unpredictability of hurricanes.

One of the biggest factors of confusion for many residents of Florida was the many different possible tracks of Ian. As it was strengthening into a hurricane after hitting Western Cuba, there were around 3 different possible tracks for the hurricane to go, right though Tampa, into the panhandle, or south of Tampa, through Fort Myers and into Orlando. The majority of news outlets, as the storm got closer, projected for Tampa to be hit hardest.

As we know now, Fort Myers was hit the hardest, along with islands and areas surrounding it. With the many counties across the state put into panic, many Floridians are taking the risk of hurricanes and tropical storms more seriously after Ian. You can prepare your home in many ways, but most importantly getting insurance that covers the damage of a hurricane like Ian. Having a hurricane escape plan with your household is important. Evacuation orders should be taken seriously in all cases, and make sure to consistently check for updates, and be ready to leave just in case.
