The Rise of the Smart Home (Part One)

It seems everyday there is some new gadget on the market being advertised to help streamline your home. From smart speakers to automatic thermostats, it took plenty of innovation to get to where the smart home is today. In this first part, we will begin to discuss the history and the innovations of the modern smart home!

The idea of a home that had remote controlled features and responses has been around for decades, but the first step was made in the 1970s with the company X10. With their technology it allowed remote control of certain light appliances as well as security. The next big step was the computer in the 80’s, however since these systems were so expensive, its use was primarily by businesses or wealthy homeowners.

Every decade marked a new step up, with the internet in the 90’s, remote control became much simpler and open. The 2000s is when this became accessible to most homeowners. Companies such as Google and Amazon developing their own systems integrated with the internet and software most consumers were already familiar with. From smart thermostats to home entertainment systems, it took more than 30 years to get to where we are!
